This video looks at the dams of the Elan Valley and Claerwen Valley in Mid-Wales that created reservoirs of such outstanding beauty.
In 1893 an extraordinary scheme was commenced to construct a series of huge dams and reservoirs in the hills of Mid Wales. A pipeline was laid from the reservoirs to Birmingham - a distance of 73 miles. This pipeline went over and through many hills, and despite a total fall of just 169 feet, the water was expected to fall by gravity to Birmingham.
The water supply scheme of the Elan Valley and Claerwen Valley was a major engineering scheme that proved to be a great success. The Welsh lakes created are outstandingly beautiful - and much visited.
This video describes the building of the dams and reservoirs and provides stunning views of 45,000 acres of Welsh lakes and hills. It is not hard to see why the Elan Valley was such an inspiration to Percy Bysshe Shelley.
